Following the end of Cybertron, the survivors fled the planet in the face of its destruction and took to the stars, the Autobots led by Optimus Prime in the search to discover a new world they could call home — while the Decepticons continued to pledge their loyalty to Megatron and his cause in conquering and spreading destruction as they went — and those who chose to remain neutral were left to their own devices. However, before either faction could pursue their intended goals, a battle between the two in the reaches of space had gone haywire and they all were forced into a cryogenically induced stasis on their respective ships.

Millions of years have passed since then and both The Ark and the Nemesis crash-landed on Earth in recent years, although their sudden arrival has been covered up as two slightly larger meteorites, a falsehood that the masses seem to wholeheartedly believe. Humanity has made minimal contact with the Cybertronians now residing on Earth, except for the government / military operatives who now work alongside the Autobots after a mutual agreement — and the civilians who have been swept up in the middle of the ongoing conflicts between the Autobots and the Decepticons.
