Back Roads & City Lights is a modern-fantasy role-play set in Seattle and the wider Puget Sound: rain, neon, and dark pines. On the surface, it’s cafés, offices, and late-night diners. Beneath that, it’s Veil Accords, old pacts, and things with claws and teeth that never left. Vampires, werewolves, witches, hunters, and humans share the same buses, bars, apartments, and alleyways, all trying not to let the truth slip into the headlines.

We focus on character-driven, freeform storytelling: slice-of-life, slow-burn drama, investigations, and the messy politics of keeping the secret in a city wired with cameras and social media. Play an exhausted agent catching cases that don’t make sense, a bartender whose regulars include both wolves and cops, an occultist in a Capitol Hill walk-up, a hunter starting to doubt the cause, or a human who stumbles into the dark.

Back Roads & City Lights is a collaborative sandbox for players who enjoy long-term arcs, found family, and consequences that matter. Plots can be intimate or sprawling: a single rainy night in an alley, an investigation into the foothills, or the slow unraveling of someone who realizes the world is nothing like they thought.

Magic, a treasured gift present in about 35% of the world’s population. The innate ability to manipulate mana given at birth to produce a vast array of results, from trivializing tasks to manipulating the world itself. Mages were raised to hone their abilities, special care given to those with particularly potent magic, an academy created for the sole purpose of guiding mages in their craft. Magic was a heavily integrated part of the world, and despite only a third of the population having it, was a common occurrence in every facet of life.

That was the case until 8 years ago, when a powerful mage named Rose Arundell took the lives of tens of thousands, including her own, in front of the entire world.

The world plunged into fear and uncertainty. After so long with magic as a mainstay, people wondered if such a powerful, dangerous thing was worth its trouble. Animosity spurred between mages and non-mages alike, many fearing for their safety as a spike in magic related crime occurred following the tragedy. World powers collectively found a burning need to act, and thus the Inquisition was born. An establishment whose sole purpose was to apprehend evil mages.

Our story takes place in Gellan, the city Rose Arundell herself once called home. The Inquisition is strong here, but many Mages stand tall in their own claimed district of the city.

Before memory, before myth, and before time itself, there were gods. The architects of reality, and the weavers of existence. They birthed the cosmos, stitched timelines, and sculpted universes in endless succession.

The Cultivation intended to unravel their feats.

It did not seek conquest. It did not seek domination. It sought erasure, and a cosmic reset for the multiverse itself.

Though the gods vanished in the struggle, the Cultivation was stopped. Earth, however, was not spared. Moments before the Cultivation's arrival, the Great Wave of Marimbus shattered the world. It drowned entire continents, wiped away civilizations, and pushed humanity to the brink of extinction. The Chimera, the first Incarnates and the chosen warriors of the gods, were wiped from history. Their home, the island of Solace, vanished not long after.

Humanity rebuilt with time. And though the Pantheon remained silent, new Incarnates emerged, carrying the distant memories of their predecessors. With these new Incarnates to aid them, human empires rose, new regions flourished, and for centuries, peace endured.

But now, something stirs once more. Incarnates are disappearing. The world itself feels unsettled. And in the fabric of space and time, something has awakened.

The Cultivation has returned.
